packpack

This fall PHCC decided to support some local kids who needed it by supplying them with backpacks stuffed with the essential school supplies they'd need as outlined by the district.  At my previous church, we adopted--formally--a school in our neighborhood.  It was a great endeavor and in a short time has reaped some significant benefits.  These benefits, by the way, are all about the kids and the school and nothing about the church.  I don't know that a single family, or individual, has joined the church because of the church's efforts--and that is totally fine.  The point isn't to build up the church, but to nurture the kids at that school who need it.

So anyway, we have been looking for something similar to get involved in around Palm Harbor and our first pitch effort at this was the backpacks.  I am hoping to begin a relationship with one of these schools and possibly do some renovation/beautification work next summer during the break, and perhaps even engage in some sort of mentoring with some of the students.  I can picture a majority of the people connected to PHCC giving an hour a week to a kid who lacks significant nurture and encouragement in their lives, and in a rather small way, begin to transform Tampa Bay one kid at a time.

When we started this backpack thing--my daughter calls her backpack her "packpack" by the way, and the other day Amy told me during bedtime prayers she was thanking God for her packpack, along with Mermaid's packpack, Belle's packpack, and a few others.  Isnt that sweet?  Any way, when we started planing it, I had a number in my head.  That number was 100.  I thought it would be a great thing is this year we could start this ministry by supplying 100 backpacks...then only who knows next year.  Would you believe that as of today we have supplied 170 "packpacks"?  And guess what.  The need is still building.  If you haven't sponsored a pack or two yet, let me encourage you to do so.  It's amazing how such a small gift can have such a meaningful impact on a child's year at school...and beyond.
